About the Piece

Amber is part of the Gem Fae series. This series consists of unqiue fairies reflecting colors of semi precious stones. Each has a unique outfit, along with orbs of the stone each fairy represents.

I have pictured amber as lovely Latino beauty with a bit of a steam punk twist. Her clothing is reminiscent of today's popular steam punk styles and harmonizes with the glowing orbs of amber in the piece. Each orb has a tiny insect encased inside just like the most desired of amber pieces.

A Bit About Amber
Amber (or, technically, resinite) is fossilized tree resin which has been treasured for its warm rich color and unusual beauty since very ancient times. Amber is not a true stone but we consider it part of the semi precious family. Amber can vary in color from light translucent yellow, to rich ruddy reds, to a deep dark smoky browns. High quality amber is used for the manufacture of ornamental objects and jewelry to this day. Amber originates as a soft, sticky tree resin, that sometimes includes animal and plant material that have become embedded in that resin before the amber begins to form and harden. These pieces of amber are the most sought after and most valuable.

Ancient historians had some fascinating thoughts on the origins of amber. Some believed it to be condensed sea foam forzen in time, suspended lynx urine, disguarded gallstones or even a type of wax left by a type of forest ant. According to Ovid, the Greeks of ancient times believed that amber's source was the tears shed by the sisters of Phaeton. Phaeton was the son of Helios and as a boy he died while driving his father's chariot too close to the earth, scorching the chariot and causing the dehydration of the Sahara desert. Amber is also thought to be s calming stone, a protective stone and a healing resource. Amber is also thought to be a great tailsman to protect it's wearer from several type of danger. The facts and lore about amber are many and highly varied and for me to try to list them all would take much longer than I have time for today. There are plenty of sites on the net for you to explore all the plentiful wisdom and particulars on this unusual and cherished fossil resin. I encourage you to do some research to find more about wonderful rich amber.
